Intelligent, stylish and raucous, Grandmas House have created a distinctive fusion of grunge and post-punk.
Grandmas House
Grandmas House are one of the most singular, visceral forces in today’s rock landscape. The Bristol quartet’s sound carries a collar-grabbing urgency which demands to be heard. Wild, unfettered noises are mined from their instruments; Poppy Dodgson’s drums are explosives, Zoë Zinsmeister basslines are sharpened like a switchblade, Polly Jessett’s guitar lines are razor sharp but with melodies that feel more like a kiss. And then there is that voice. Yasmin Berndt’s vocals are corrosive, as capable of righteous fury as they are of syrupy fragility.
Intelligent, stylish and raucous, the group formed as a trio in 2019 as they “wanted a place to scream about the stuff we care about, which is why we started writing music and learning our instruments which lead to us moving in together and starting the band.” Citing influences from Nirvana and Porridge Radio to Idles and boygenius, the band have been gradually developing their dynamic songwriting in the years since, creating a distinctive fusion of grunge and post-punk across a string of early EPs and singles, most recently on 2025’s Anything For You EP. The music moves between aggressive and heavy instrumentation and slower, more melodic passages, with an ever-evolving focus on using group vocals to develop expansive harmonies.
The newly-minted quartet made their 2026 return with a brand new single ‘DOG’. Produced by Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius, Yard Act), its layered harmonies and surf-influenced chorus take their sound to a new depth of resonance as they tackle all-too-familiar experiences of not being listened to by doctors and feelings – be they relating to illness, mental health, grief or trauma – that persist to follow you in everyday life.
